Now that you have successfully downloaded and installed Windows Upgrade Advisor and further have registered your device for the Windows Mobile 10 upgrade, you are ready to begin the download and installation processes. It connects to the network to check for new updates, then helps you free up space for updates by recommending files that you can move to an SD card or OneDrive to make room for the upgrade. After the update is completed, you can move the files back to your phone.”

Upgrade Advisor application allows upgrading eligible Windows Phone 8.1 devices to Windows 10 Mobile using Wi-Fi connection to download the updates.

Preconditions for OTA upgrade

  • Internet connectivity over Wi-Fi
  • The device has up to date Microsoft account
  • The device has enough free storage space to download and extract the upgrade files, notification is shown for insufficient space
  • The battery has over 40% of charge left
  • It is recommended to back-up contacts, photos, files etc. before the upgrade

Upgrade process

  1. Open Store application on the phone
  2. Search for “upgrade advisor” and install it
  3. Open the Upgrade Advisor, tap Next and let the application check if the Windows 10 Mobile upgrade is available for the device
  4. If the upgrade is available, tick Enable Windows 10 upgrade checkbox and tap Next
  5. Upgrade Advisor initializes the device for upgrade
  6. Note: There might be required Windows Phone 8.x updates before Windows 10 Mobile can be installed. Install these updates and return to the Upgrade Advisor app to continue upgrading to Windows 10 Mobile
  7. Open Settings > Phone update to download and install Windows 10 Mobile

After upgrade

  • Some applications (Mail, Photos and Calendar) may require an update after the Windows 10 Mobile
  • Connect the phone to Wi-Fi network, open Store and check for available application updates.
  • The device can be updated to latest available Windows 10 Mobile version by checking updates in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update or by using Over the Cable updater until “device is up to date” message is shown

Over the Cable updater tool upgrades eligible Windows Phone 8.1 devices to Windows 10 Mobile using PC to download the updates.
